On June 16, 1976 South African learners started upraisings against the apartheid education system. June 16 is now an annual public holiday in South Africa called Youth Day. In 2006 the celebrations were special: 30 years after the upraisings. South Africa was celebrating Youth Month.

The celebrations in Port Alfred were very special: the Minister of Sport and Recreation visited the Youth Day Celebrations for the official opening of Nelson Mandela Township Rowing Club.
