Board of Governors

Decisions in Nemato Change a Life are made by the gold members: the beneficiaries with the highest commitment to our empowerment programme (for youth, by youth). Our Board of Governors forms a safety net that can only act to overrule decisions made by the gold members that go against the aims of our organisation. The Board has four members: two of our most senior beneficiaries and two people from outside with a strong passion for and understanding of our organisation.

Bunie M Matlanyane Sexwale

Bunie M Matlanyane Sexwale has a background in research and writing on social issues in South Africa. Her work has been published in academic collections on gender and race, where she has explored topics such as violence against women, domestic labour, and the social conditions affecting vulnerable groups. Her contributions reflect a strong analytical approach and an interest in the intersection of gender, labour, and inequality. Through her writing, she has engaged with key debates on social justice and the lived realities of marginalised communities. This background provides a solid foundation in understanding complex social challenges and the factors that shape opportunity and inequality in South Africa.

Lesley Lambert

Lesley Lambert is a communications and corporate social investment specialist. She has worked as a financial journalist for Business Day, a media advisor in the South African Ministry of Finance for Finance Ministers Derek Keys and Chris Liebenberg, and a communications executive for Billiton and Murray & Roberts. In 2003, Lesley established a financial communications consulting business which offers services to the corporate sector in communications strategy development, writing, editing and management or promotion of corporate events and corporate social investment programmes. Lesley has known the Nemato project since its earliest days in 2006 when it won the Jack Cheetham Memorial Award for sports development, and has assisted in securing corporate funding for Nemato Change a Life.

Athenkosi Hlekani

Athi has been a member right from the start of our rowing club at the end of 2005. At the young age of 16 he did the acceptance speech when we won the Jack Cheetham Award, what earned him the words "young man, you have a great future ahead of you" from the CEO of Murray & Roberts. He was scouted as rower by the University of Johannesburg and became the first black captain of UJ rowing club. As only South African he was selected to participate in a United Nations Youth Leadership Camp in Qatar. Athenkosi Hlekani was the first member of Nemato Change a Life to graduate with a degree in Business Science and he completed a post-graduate course in education. He is working as a teacher and rowing coach. In 2022 and 2023 he represented South Africa as the coach of the junior pair at the Rowing World Championships.

Simlindile Veto

Simlindile Veto has been actively involved in community development for many years. He was a long-standing member of Nemato Change a Life and its rowing club, and served as chairperson of the organisation in 2012. During this time, he was also part of the restructuring process that helped shape its development. He studied Public Management (N4–N6) at Port Elizabeth College, building a foundation in administration and governance. He is widely respected as a community leader and currently works in school administration. His experience reflects a consistent commitment to community involvement and organisational development.
