Knysna Regatta (14-15 October)

Our quad, with Simthembile Bari, Akhone Quma, Thando Ngoqo and Odwa Ntamo won the Under 19 A long distance heads race in Knysna. Fantastic achievement! Also congratulations to Sheldon with his first victory as coach, what a beauty, this first one!

Sheldon our new coach

Old Nemato rower Sheldon Nelson is our new rowing coach. It's part of a rowing development project by St Andrew's College in Grahamstown. They employ Sheldon and assist in training him and our rowers.

Odwa in England (29 April - 7 May)

Odwa Ntamo was selected for the South African Development Team and visited England. He is the first person to travel overseas as Nemato rower. He visited London, Oxford, Henley and Eton College. He competed in a quad, four and eight.

Leander rower visiting Nemato (9-10 April)

Emily Ashford from Leander Club, in Henley-on-Thames, England, visited us. She rowed with Odwa on our Kowie River and visited us in the township and watched our gymnasts, fencers and gymnasts in action. She gave Odwa a Leander jacket signed by Olympic rowers from Leander and a Leander trisuit. She donated Nemato a picture of the 2016 British Olympic rowers, signed by all the Leander Olympians, and the original Leander flag that has been on the roof of the Leander's clubhouse for many years.

Eight as new with Radley help

Max Hobhouse and James Murrell of Radley College Boat Club in England did the long row from Radley to London to raise money to refurbish the Nemato eight. The boat is 12 years old and needed major maintenance and repair. The high costs were out of reach for us. It’s great to have the boat back in a state which is as good as new!

Novices & Masters Regatta and Camp (18-20 March)

Odwa Ntamo was invited to the Novices & Mastters Regatta in East London and the camp that followed. He won his race in the single scull and in the eight. At the camp he was both a coach and a rower.

SA Champs (2-5 March)

Five Nemato rowers competed at the South African Championships in Gauteng. We visited Constitution Hill, where the Constitutional Court is build in the old apartheid prison. Unfortunately there is still apartheid in rowing. At the national championships, our rowers are, as members of a club, not welcome in the schools races, although our rowers are the same age and also at school. We won silver and gold medals, but only against a hand full of club teams.

Buffalo Regatta (9-11 February)

We went to East London for the Buffalo Regatta, the only major national competition where clubs, schools and universities compete at equal level. With only the best teams from around the country competing, reaching finals was the highest we achieved. No medals this time.

Settlers Sprint Regatta (28 January)

No luck at the competition in Grahamstown. We couldn't get the wheels of the boat trailer sorted out on time so we were at the competition without our boats. Only for our quad we managed to borrow a boat, but we were late at the start and disqualified.
